This poem is basically about how America is known as “land of the free and home of the brave” but in reality it’s really not because everyday  thousands are imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit while people who do actually commit serious crimes are given help and a slap on the wrist.

Some background information: Kalief Browder is an African American male who was falsely accused of stealing a backpack at the age of sixteen. He was then imprisoned for three years on Rykers Island without trial. During his time in prison he spent most of his time in solitary confinement and was starved for days at a time and abused by officers and other inmates. Also while he was in prison he attempted suicide 5-6 times and didn’t get any mental help that he needed until the last time. He had a choice to plead guilty and be sent home because he had already served time or plead innocent and serve fifteen years. Kalief chose to plead innocent and fight it. He was released and two years after his release, he committed suicide.

Welcome to America.

This country is really a beautiful place.

In this country

violence

causes silence

and kneeling

causes weeping.

This country is really a beautiful place.

If you don’t mind getting beat and bullied because of your race.

It’s America!

And here we live life the free way

but don’t get any ideas you’re still mentally enslaved.

But hey, it’s okay, because we came a long way.

So just ignore the problems and enjoy your stay.

Welcome to America!

Over here, you’re judged on the color of your skin.

But who cares? It’s not as bad as it was way back when.

This is America, land of the free and home of the brave.

But be careful if you’re black, when you’re pulled over, you can’t be saved.

Over here, in America, you have your freedom.

But did Kalief Browder really belong in prison?

Shh … we’re talking about how freedom has arisen.

So just keep quiet, and ignore the millions who don’t belong in prison.

In this country we honor the people who fight for our freedom,

and once you’re 18 you can fight too and be willing to die, just like them.

America is the place to be.

If you shoot up a whole school, we’ll get you the help that you need.

and you’ll get off Scott free.

Freedom is what you have indeed.

That’s if you’re white at least.

Welcome to America.

Please enjoy your chains.

Oops. I meant stay.
